Project

Glenorchy, New Zealand: Reliable Water for Generations

Case study

Reliable Water for Generations

Future-Proofing Water Supply with Bolted Steel Reservoirs.

Project overview

In December 2023, Reliant Solutions completed a critical infrastructure project in Glenorchy, New Zealand. The project involved replacing four ageing precast concrete tanks with two new bolted steel reservoirs to future-proof and increase the township’s water capacity and ensure a reliable water supply for the community.

The challenge

The existing precast concrete tanks had served the Glenorchy community for many years, but were no longer fit for purpose. The system was unable to meet growing water demands and presented risks due to the area’s seismic activity, being located near a fault line within a high-risk seismic zone.

The new reservoirs, built by Reliant Solutions, are designed to address these challenges by providing additional storage capacity and improving the overall resilience of the water supply system.

Our solution

Reliant Solutions designed and constructed two new bolted steel reservoirs to replace the ageing infrastructure. The reservoirs were engineered to provide increased storage capacity, improved water quality, and enhanced operational efficiency.

Designed in accordance with AS/ NZS1170.4 using a Z factor of 0.4, among the highest seismic hazard ratings in New Zealand, the reservoirs ensure long-term reliability in a challenging environment.

By replacing the outdated precast concrete tanks with new, high-capacity bolted steel reservoirs, Glenorchy is now better equipped to provide a reliable and high-quality water supply for its residents.

Community benefits

  • Reliable water supply: Increased
storage capacity ensures consistent access to clean drinking water year-round.
  • Enhanced safety: The robust seismic design reduces vulnerability to natural disasters.
  • Future-ready infrastructure: Supports population growth and ensures long-term sustainability for the township.

Key features

  • Seismic resilience: Designed with reinforced concrete bases, optimised anchoring details, and integrated shear keys to mitigate uplift and lateral forces.
  • Durability: Built with high-quality Fusion Bonded Epoxy coated panels for superior corrosion protection and a service life of 50 years.
  • Structural efficiency: The tapered beam roof design enhances strength while withstanding high snow and wind loads.
  • Aesthetic integration: Custom paint applied to blend with Glenorchy’s natural surroundings.
