Reliant Solutions was contracted to design, fabricate and construct two new holding tanks measuring 775m3 and 875 m3 as part of a new natural gas-fired electricity plant to contain its raw water and demineralised water. The plant, made up of two 50 megawatt GE gas turbines, is designed to meet electricity demand at peak periods as well as provide a baseload when wind or hydro generation was low.
Demineralised water is ultra-pure, it is produced by a process of removing sands and minerals from the water. This ultra-pure water is then directly injected into the gas turbine combustion area increasing the power output of the gas turbines.
Our Epoxy coated bolted steel tanks were chosen due to its chemical corrosion and excellent abrasion resistance properties for storage of demineralised water. Concrete is particularly vulnerable when in contact with demineralised water (acid attack of granulated and leaching of lime in particular – aggravated by the porosity of the concrete). Only inert materials are appropriate for the storage of demineralised water. We constructed an epoxy coated steel floor over our concrete foundation. This solution is intended to protect the concrete bottom which acts as a seating for the tanks, thus avoiding the need for protection resins, which require regular renewal (maintenance problem).
The Raw Water tank featured our standard concrete foundation with a specially painted grey geodesic dome roof to match the surrounding infrastructure.
