Project
Roots Street West Water Treatment Plant
Case study
Strengthening water resilience through integrated design
The Roots Street West Water Treatment Plant delivers a new, reliable water source for Feilding through a fully integrated facility combining a deep-water bore, treatment plant, and reticulation storage on a single integrated site.
Project overview
Developed as part of Manawatū District Council’s long-term water strategy, this project represents a practical, forward-focused investment in drinking water security. The plant has been designed to exceed current New Zealand drinking water standards while supporting projected growth.
The challenge
Council identified the need for an additional, reliable water source to meet Feilding’s current demand and future expansion. Roots Street West was selected for its proximity to the town centre, its safe distance from known fault lines, and its alignment with future growth planning.

Our solution
Reliant Solutions designed and installed a Glass-Fused to Steel storage reservoir as part of an integrated system, supporting efficient storage and distribution within Feilding’s reticulation network.
Water is extracted from the bore, treated on site, stored, and then returned to the network for distribution. This integrated layout enhances operational efficiency and strengthens overall system resilience.
The completed facility combines a 400-metre-deep bore, treatment plant, and storage reservoir within a compact footprint. This co-located configuration reduces land requirements and streamlines operations compared to traditional, separated systems.
The bore pump is positioned 100 metres below ground and operates at 60 litres per second, while the treatment plant can process up to 5,000 cubic metres of water per day. With Feilding’s average daily demand ranging between 9,000 and 12,000 cubic metres, the plant supplies up to one-third of the town’s drinking water.
By consolidating extraction, treatment, and storage on a single site, Council has delivered a modern, efficient water asset that strengthens the long-term security of Feilding’s supply.
The site was officially opened on 19 November 2025 by Elected Members, Council Officers, Ngāti Kauwhata and project partners.
